Butyrate bobbins represent a somewhat weird "super" niche within the already niche world of pickup winding and repairs - they are, for the most part, exactly the same as the "modern" ABS and PVC bobbins you'll find on nearly all humbuckers nowadays - but they're made using a now obsolete plastic from the Fifties!

Its not without its draw backs frankly - whilst it feels very similar to ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) - its spiritual successor (Presumably coming from the same roots judging by the Butadiene) - its next to impossible to polish to a gloss finish, so whilst we've listed it as "matt" for the sake of simplicity, its actually somewhere between a truly matted finish and a gloss one.

Also - and this is something to really bare in mind - its got a distinctive smell. Theres no getting away from it. We've been dreading these coming into the stores for months because of it - its pretty close to Parmesan cheese (or if you've got kids... you'll know exactly what it smells like!) - it is, honestly, not that invasive if your not actively sniffing the things, but worth mentioning for the sake of fairness on our better halves.

But - for all that - these are made from the same plastic that was used on the original Humbuckers back in the 1950s - so if your going for a proper, full blown replica, or a faithful restoration - these are the bobbins to use.
