Technical Specs
A "small" bass bridge cover – matching up to the style used on basses made after 1958
The original design for the bridge cover appeared on the first run of basses (now more commonly known as the
Telecaster® bass
) which ran from late 1950 right through to 1957. The actual plate was similar to the oversized plate we see running through to the 80s on sister models – but for some reason, it was completely open backed (despite the original being a “string through body” bridge)
Never the less, come 58, this style of bridge cover was unveiled (despite this style of bass now sporting a string through top bridge…) with the completely closed back, and a slightly smaller “clam shell” design. It would run to 1979, for some reason one year less than its counterpart, and for whatever reason, towards the end of its life, never proved as popular. It’s very common to see older models with screw holes either side of the bridge and pickup where the covers have been removed.
Since its discontinuation, and the subsequent changes to the production, the covers still occasionally turn up on the vintage re-issues, and it’s worth bearing in mind when making historical builds.
